Why Calgary is a Thriving Gem in the West of Canada: A Family Adventure and More

Jan 5, 2025

Calgary is a city that’s as breathtaking as it is vibrant, nestled in the heart of Alberta and framed by the towering Rocky Mountains to the west. Having spent an incredible week exploring this up-and-coming metropolis, it’s clear to me why Calgary is quickly earning a reputation as a North American Dubai or Singapore. With its unique mix of natural beauty, cultural attractions, and a thriving economy, Calgary is a city that begs to be discovered. Here's why this city might just be the perfect place to live, work, and play.

Stunning Cityscapes and Unforgettable Experiences

We stayed in a beautiful unit overlooking the city, and the view alone was worth the trip. The glittering skyline, with the Calgary Tower at its centre, is a testament to the city’s growth and ambition. One of our most memorable evenings was celebrating my wife’s birthday at the revolving restaurant atop the Calgary Tower. The panoramic views, paired with an unforgettable blueberry cobbler dessert, made for a magical experience.

During the day, Calgary’s parks and outdoor spaces provided us with endless adventures. We strolled through Prince’s Island Park, walking alongside the iced-over Bow River, and had lunch at the "River Café," a restaurant that’s as picturesque as it is delicious. Another highlight was Lindsay Park, where my daughter delighted in the playgrounds while we watched squirrels darting playfully through the snow.

Cultural Gems: A Feast for the Senses

Calgary’s cultural attractions are equally impressive. The Devonian Gardens, situated within a downtown shopping mall, were a tropical oasis in the heart of the city. The lush greenery and subtropical plants created an idyllic retreat from the sub-zero temperatures outside, and the children’s play area was a big hit with our daughter.

We also visited the "Wonderland" sculpture, a striking giant mesh head designed by artist Jaume Plensa, and the iconic Calgary Central Library. This architectural marvel is as functional as it is beautiful, with a dramatic central atrium that spirals upward, flooded with natural light—a true haven for readers and learners alike. Calgary’s National Music Centre (Studio Bell), with its five floors of Canadian music history, provided a unique and interactive experience. From playing instruments to learning about iconic Canadian artists, this museum was both educational and entertaining.

A Day at the Zoo and an Evening of Lights

Our trip to the Calgary Zoo was another highlight. The day was spent admiring animals from all corners of the world, but the real magic happened after dark. The Zoolights transformed the zoo into a vibrant wonderland, complete with ice skating, axe throwing, and dazzling light displays. It was the perfect way to end our Calgary adventures.

A Quick Escape to Banff: Nature’s Masterpiece

One of Calgary’s greatest assets is its proximity to Banff National Park, just an hour’s drive away. Banff feels like stepping into a postcard, with its snow-covered peaks and crystal-clear lakes. We hiked around the majestic Lake Louise, even venturing onto its frozen surface, and treated ourselves to hot chocolate at the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.

Our snowboarding day at Sunshine Village was nothing short of spectacular. The powder was perfect, and the blue skies provided breathtaking views of the Rockies. Back in Banff, we walked along the Bow River and spotted wildlife like white-tailed deer and even a moose. These serene moments in nature were a perfect contrast to the city’s buzz.

Calgary: The Lifestyle and Economy

Calgary offers a unique blend of urban sophistication and natural splendour, but it’s not just about the scenery. The city is one of Canada’s economic powerhouses, with a thriving tech industry, strong energy sector, and a growing reputation as a hub for startups. It’s also incredibly affordable compared to other global cities.

  • Cost of Living Comparison: Living in Calgary is significantly more affordable than in London. Housing costs, for example, are about 50% lower, and you’ll get far more space for your money. Everyday expenses like dining out and transportation are also friendlier on the wallet.

  • A Growing City: Calgary’s population and economy continue to grow. With a median age of just over 37 years, it’s a youthful, dynamic city that’s becoming increasingly diverse.

  • Lifestyle Benefits: Calgary boasts over 333 sunny days a year, making it one of Canada’s sunniest cities. Pair that with the accessibility of world-class outdoor activities and a strong sense of community, and it’s easy to see why more people are calling Calgary home.

Final Thoughts: Calgary’s Allure

Calgary is a city that offers the best of both worlds. It’s a thriving urban centre with all the amenities you could ask for, yet it’s just a stone’s throw from some of the most stunning natural landscapes on earth. Whether you’re raising a family, starting a career, or looking for your next great adventure, Calgary has something to offer. It’s a city that’s often overlooked but deserves to be on everyone’s radar.

For us, Calgary wasn’t just a holiday destination; it was an eye-opener to the possibilities of life in a city that’s brimming with potential. If you’re considering a move or even just a visit, take it from me: Calgary is a gem waiting to be discovered.
